Scooter Insurance: What to Do in an Accident

Unfortunately, accidents do happen from time to time. Before you make your scooter insurance claim, let’s go over the basic steps that apply after any driving accident:

1. Stay as calm as possible.

2. Check for injuries. Life and health are more important than vehicle damage, even to your precious scooter. Whenever in doubt, always call an ambulance.

3. If there are no serious injuries and the accident is minor, move vehicles to a safe place, to avoid the risk of moving traffic.

4. Both vehicles should turn on hazard lights for safety.

5. Call the police immediately, even if the accident is minor.

6. Notify your scooter insurance company about the accident right away.

7. Never sign any document unless it is for the police or your scooter insurance company.

8. Make notes about the accident, including the specific damages to all vehicles involved. If the name on the auto registration or insurance policy is different from the name of the driver, establish the relationship and jot it down. Get witness information, if possible, as well.

9. Be honest and polite, but don’t tell the other drivers or the police that the accident was your fault, even if you believe it was. Also, do not accuse the other driver of being at fault at this time. Remember that everyone is usually quite shaken up right after an accident, and it is wise to stick to the basic facts. Limit your discussion of the accident to the scooter insurance company and the police. Always be truthful.

10. If you have a camera, and it is safe to do so, photograph the accident scene.

11. If possible, do not leave the accident scene before the police officers and other drivers do.

12. Finally, remember that while getting the facts is very important, investigating the accident should be left to the police officers and the insurance companies.
